I'm really lost for ways to describe this gig.

As Amanda Palmer explains it during the gig, it was a total last minute surprise show for people that was the result of a bunch of emails and tweets about GoMA at Southbank. One thing lead to another and Amanda came down to do one of her ninja gigs.

I've never been much of a Dresden Dolls fan, but a bunch of mates are, so I decided to trek on down and record it for them. I had no idea what I was getting into...

AP requested people show up in uni-colour outfits, so it was certainly a colourful mob waiting for her arrival. As soon as she walked into GoMA she took everyone outside onto the front lawn. So quick was she to get outside and start that I didn't even have time to set up my mics! I decided to just record the show using an LS-10.

Plenty of highlights in this gig, including but not limited to:

A cover of Radiohead's 'Freak'
A cover of Amazing Grace
Coin Operated Boy - Improv on the ukulele with a simon-says/follow the leader/conga line

Now for some notes about the recording. It's not a great recording by any means. It was easily the most difficult gig I've had to record, with the strong wind, running around, Amanda's dancing and moving about, no amplification, level clipping - I could go on and on. I'm putting this up here for the fans - I know what its like to be a massive fan of a artist/band, you appreciate any special recordings, no matter how bad they might sound.

Flew down to Melbourne for a holiday to see some mates, so we got tickets to see the Grates. I saw them last Friday and they were good but this concert blew it out of the water.
The Hifi was packed, a sold out show on the eve of Halloween. The band came out covered in blood, members of the crowd in costume. I can't describe how incredible the vibe was. Same set as the Brisbane show sadly but still great.
Can't wait to see them again!

I've been really slack with my taping lately, tonight was no exception. Left my gear at home because I woke up literally just before the gig and rushed out.

Exceptional show, although it seems Miranda (Bass/Keys) was absent - not sure if that's how the whole tour will be. The Tivoli is a fantastic venue, the crowd wasn't as packed as the last Brisbane show but they still went nuts.

Can't really complain about this gig, the guys were as amazing as ever. There was some audio problems with Patience's microphone for a bit during Carve Your Name (I think it was that song anyway) but the crowd filled in the words. I thought the lighting was a bit lack luster since it was a show at the Tiv and not a little bar or something but thats just me being picky. Overall the show was bloody fantastic and I had a amazing time.

Flying down to Melbourne on Monday to see some friends, looks like we are all going to see The Grates at the HiFi that night! I won't be taping but I know a recording will surface shortly after so look out for it!

This show was originally set to be played at The Arena but it got upgraded to the Riverstage to fit more people. Perfect! Except torrential rain hit Brisbane less than an hour before the show. Soaking wet and cold, it was still one hell of a show.

I didn't record because of the heavy rain. I'm really annoyed because it was such a great gig. The guys said they'll be back in March so I'll be sure to record then!

Amazing show full of energy. Fantastic crowd too. Highlights included 1996, Let's Dance To Joy Division and Techno Fan. I don't know what else I can say about this gig, it was just incredible.

After the encore the guys did a little jam session, I managed to get that recorded.

06.10.2011 - Meatloaf

Despite the rough media beat up on Meatloaf lately (Search for the AFL Grand Final performance..) - I still thoroughly enjoyed the show. Meatloaf is something of an idol for me, I grew up on his music and have remained a massive fan. With that said I went into the show with low expectations. I was proved wrong, I came out buzzing.

I must admit, being 64 years old the man isn't in his prime anymore, but he still didn't disappoint! I was a bit shocked to hear 'Bat Out of Hell' as the third song, would have preferred it much later in the set, but it was a solid two hour show. He didnt do too great with newer songs, out of breath and failing to hit the right key, but he made sure to impress on the classics.

Was I disappointed with the AFL performance, absolutely. Was I disappointed with the Brisbane show? Not a chance.

Meatloaf was supported by Thirsty Merc. Not a fan, doubt I ever will be. That's not a beat up on the band, I'm sure their music appeals to others, just not me. Not sure why they'd support Meatloaf though... Regardless their set was pretty solid. A note to the lead singer though (Rai I think it is) - after every song, stop standing up, cheering and looking for applause. If you're good, people will clap and cheer..

Firstly, I just want to state that I did NOT record this gig. I found this recording on my computer from a few years ago. It was originally a video recording which has been converted to MP3. From memory the taper was a guy by the name of Johnny. I was there that night and it was a blast. The whole Blink break up was a total downer for me, so it was great to have the chance to see Tom live.

Pretty sure this is the first and only time AVA have played in Brisbane. The Tivoli was totally packed. There was plenty of laughs, a cover of I Miss You and There Is and even a crowd surfer going over the barricade and knocking Tom over. Great gig, worth the download.

Pretty excited for this - an excellent idea for people like me who are stuck working their weekends to make sure yours is one to remember. On the door list to see Children Collide. Not a massive fan but I won't say no to a free gig.

I know I said ages ago I was going to upload this show, but I never got round to it.
After I cut up the whole show into individual tracks, I realised I missed one song. I pretty much couldn't be bothered to recut the show, so up until recently I forgot about it.

Having re-listened to the show, I'm not sure its worth uploading. As I've said before, I didn't bring my mics, so the show was recorded with my LS-10 sitting in my lap.

I've seen a fair few of these acts before, so I'm keen to see them again. Big Scary left a big impression on me at the Grates show recently. For just over $50, 2 nights of entertainment in a form similar to SWSX (running to and from venues, tents, bars and basements) - it's worth the money.

Personally, I love the new songs and it was great to hear them live. Patience crowd surfing was fantastic, and her monster suit with confetti in the encore was great. Will be sure to see them next time they are in town. Got the all clear from the guys to tape this show.

First time recording with my sub-cardioid caps. I love the sound but got some mild bass distortion, despite running my levels low, powering on 12V, line in and having no level peaks. Probably didn't help that I stack taped. Regardless, it's barely noticeable.

Saw these guys at BIGSOUND 2010. Fun act to watch. Although I understand the lead singer uses the stage name Guineafowl, he should really make it a band name - he would just be pretty average without the band. Regardless, good to see them supporting The Grates.

An amazing opening to the festival - glad I chose to see Ben over ZZ-Top. It was truly an experience to be in that Mojo tent that night. Not only is this worth downloading because of the reunion, but you need to hear the story about Leon and his Djembe for that night!

Firstly, I just wanted to thank Kate Miller-Heidke for linking my blog on her Facebook & Twitter. My web traffic exploded in a matter of an hour when she did, and I've been getting consistent viewings since. I'd also like to thank the other handful of artists, fan sites, tapers and more who have found my blog and linked it around.

I've learnt a lot in the past 12 months I've been taping - the in's and out's of taping, editing and more. I have that Taper Section forum to thank for that.

I just wish Australia, its venues and artists were more open to taping, like in the US. Maybe in time..

One hell of a show! Ben Folds is one talented man.
Two and a half hours of solid entertainment.
Apparently we were also recorded during 'Not The Same' for a forthcoming Ben Folds retrospective CD.

Kate Miller-Heidke was supporting. A short but sweet set, amazing regardless. Played another new song, about a drunk friend/family member at a get together. Also good to hear Fatty Gets A Stylist playing over the PA before the set.

I didn't record Kate's set sadly, but I did get Ben's. Only used my LS-10, no external mics - however the recording sounds great.

Bluesfest - Day 4 Round Up

Pretty great day at the festival yesterday.
Caught a bit of the Rockwiz show, didn't hang around though because it was pretty much the same as last year, although Julia showing off clevage was fantastic.

First up was Kate Miller-Heidke. It was a mix between their acoustic shows and the full shows, nice combination in my opinion. Opening with the Fatty Gets A Stylist song "Tiger Inside Will Eat The Child" was a highlight for me. The new song about Australian bogans was perfect too.

Caught a bit of Robert Randolf too. Really good live act! Loved the Zeppelin cover too.

Highlight was Washington. I've seen them about 10 times over the past few years, but never on a big stage. It was a nice change and it was amazing to see the change in the bands confidence and performance since I last saw them at the Zoo.

Cat Empire went off! Insane show, great party band. Was a real shame a group of young teens had to try and ruin the fun, its the one thing I hate about the weekend shows at Bluesfest.

Don't have a ticket for Day 5 so I'll just be chilling until Day 6.

Jac Stone - Live at Barsoma

Went along with a friend last night to see Jac Stone play at Barsoma.
I've never been to Barsoma before, but I'm in love with it now. Such a great bar.

Since I've seen Jac numerous times, I didn't bother to take my recording rig because I wanted to have a drink and a chat with my mate, instead of being dead quiet and still. I did take my LS-10 along though and recorded the gig. The recording is decent but I won't bother uploading it unless someone wants it.

Great set, the guys looked like they were having a blast. Chris wasn't on bass for this show, he was replaced by Yanto's brother, whos name I didn't catch.

Neil Diamond - Post-show Review

Neil wasn't bad for an old man, not bad at all. As I said in my last post, I'm not a follower, so I only knew a handful of songs, but even the ones I didn't know were fantastic. His band was large and enthusiastic. Although being in my early 20's, I felt largely out of place in a crowd of 40 - 60 year olds.

Sweet Caroline was the highlight of my night, and Neil played it about 5 times in a row haha.
Probably a good thing I didn't record, security was anal about anyone even holding up a mobile to take a photo.

Great night out though.

Jac Stone EP Launch

I saw Jac Stone at the Old Museum last night for her 'Leave Me Here' EP Launch. Word's cannot describe how fantastic this gig was.

Supported by Emma-Louise and sharing the EP launch with James Grehan, both artists were great. Emma's songs were catchy and the lyrics emotional and meaningful, whilst Jame's set reminded me off the Byron Bay Bluesfest, acoustic guitars, slide guitars, loop pedals and just fun jams.

The highlight of the night was of course the lovely Jac Stone. From the beginning the crowd was up from their soft red cushions on the floor and dancing and cheering. This was Jac's night and you could tell by the smile on her face that she was loving it.

In my opinion, my recording turned out fantastic (minus a few pop's and feedback, which actually came from the PA, not my gear). I've added the fades, some slight EQ. Once I get a chance I'll track it and upload it here. Keep your eyes out for this recording, its well and truly worth the download!

First time seeing the girls live, I enjoyed the set, wasn't blown away though. Missed recording the first song or two, was still setting up my microphones and there was no warning the girls were coming out on stage.

EDIT: Jac's manager asked that the files not be made public, I'm assuming due to the fact Jac's EP isn't out yet. As such, I have removed the link.

Saw Jac Stone at the Zoo last night, it's the second time I've seen Jac live. Loved every minute of it. Thankfully Jac gave me permission to record audio, so I was able to set up a stand, instead of having to hide my microphones. The first few songs picked up a bit of noise from the fans on the wall, and some very minor distortion, but apart from that the rest of the gig is solid. Darren Middleton of Powderfinger fame made an appearance on a few songs. There was also a great Kings of Leon cover.

Got to meet Jac after the show, she is super lovely. Managed to get a setlist too. It's worth downloading this show, can't wait for the EP!

This was the third time I've seen Jack this year and it was certainly the best show. Saw him for the start of the tour in Byron Bay and saw him last night for the final show of the tour. So amazing. Jack and the band appeared to be loving it, and the crowd was going nuts for them. One of the highlights for me was Jack and band covering 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun' with Tegan & Sara.

This was my first time using my new microphones, a set of SP-CMC-2 cardioids, so I was nervous as to what the result would be, especially when I had hardly any time to set up. Surprisingly though the recording is excellent. The girls behind me got particularly drunk and loud near the end (one obnoxious bitch was talking on her phone loudly through numerous songs) but I wasn't able to move away.

I only discovered Jac Stone's music a few days ago. I had a quick listen on her Myspace and was instantly in love with her music. Went down to the Troubadour and caught her show. Amazing show and it was great to see Chris from Washington on bass.

Sadly my recording turned out to be rubbish. My right channel on my CA-1's has decided to die. Also I moved around a lot in the gig, and picked up a lot of crowd chatter. So at this point in time, I don't think its worth uploading, or editing the recording. If anyone is desperately after a copy, I might upload it.

This was the night time show (6:30pm doors) at the Tivoli.
Angus and Julia were incredible, such an amazing duo. Talented beyond words.
Wasn't too keen on the all ages crowd. Got stuck in a group of chatty teenage girls, and couldn't get away. I've tried to take them out a bit in the mix, but you can't do much with an audience recording. I've boosted the left channel a bit, as they were on my right.

I've been waiting a long time to see these guys live. Missed them 3 years ago, but I finally got my chance to see them last night, and they did not disappoint. My highlight was Lazy Eye, an amazing song that was even better live. Also Nikki is a babe on the bass.

Incredible show. BoT were amazing, energetic and lovely every minute of the show. There were a few wankers causing problems in the crowd all night, and security had to come rushing in a few times, but those idiots aside, it was a great night.

This band was recommend to me by a friend, so I decided to check them out during BIGSOUND. Pretty good live act. My taping spot was less than ideal, absolutely packed tiny room at Ric's Bar, recording from a low position with people in front of me, but the tape still turned out pretty good.

My Post-Production Process

In case anyone is wondering if I do any work to my recordings after I have taped them, this is my post-production process:

1) Fade In/Out with Audacity
2) Normalize (if required)
3) Dither and export to .wav 16/44.1
4) IntuitQ in Harbal
5) Track and export in CD Wave

I do VERY minimal post-production work on my recordings, so what you hear is what was played.

08.09.2010 - Washington

Despite the short 30 minute set, this is possibly one of the best Washington shows I've ever been to. The band were energetic, the crowd was intimate yet pumped. The band played at the Artisan gallery outdoor tent for the BIGSOUND festival. Bit disappointed Sunday Best wasn't played, but all the other hits were there. LOVED this version of Someone Else In Mind. Amazing concert, worth the download!

BIGSOUND - Night One

Only managed to record one band on the first night of BIGSOUND, my favourite band: Washington.
Their set was incredible and energetic, despite being limited to 30 minutes.
The setlist was:

I wanted to tape the Jezebels, but security at the Troubadour was being dicks, saying the venue was at capacity despite the fact it wasn't. It was also totally ok for the door man to let any of his friends in, or chicks who were willing to give him a bit of a hug and a kiss. Tosser.

I'll track and upload the Washington set sometime on the weekend.

02.09.2010 - Washington

Incredible concert. Megan and the band were full of energy. It just so happens this was the 100th Washington gig of the year. Crowd took a few songs to warm up and get into it, but by the end they were rocking it. The band also played a new song and a few covers.
